Amongst the areas of use and sectors which require work at height job safety, the buildings under construction and operational, wind turbines, tower type buildings such as industrial chimneys and silos; structures with metal construction and wide roof space such as telecommunication relay stations, sports halls, Olympics stadium, shopping malls, concert stages, upper floors, high platforms, roofs, production lines, crane systems in factories like oil refineries, petro-chemistry facilities may be listed.
Safety nets and lifelines are used for industrial purposes as well as in tourism and entertainment sector. Lifelines and safety nets may be preferred for the safety of tourists, customers and employees on high-rises platforms and canopy tours in facilities such as amusement and adventure parks, fun fairs, aqua parks. They may also be used at high rocky regions like cliffs and canyon walls in national parks and nature conservation parks, trekking, nature walking courses in order to ensure safety of the visitors and outdoors athletes.
Lifelines is a rope or a rail designed for the person who shall work basically at height, in a manner to attach worker’s full body harness to the rope holder and/or lanyard and to be able to move while they are working. Lifeline systems sort as vertical and horizontal lifeline, temporary and permanent lifelines and steel and synthetic lifelines.
Vertical lifeline: Provide protection for the personnel working at vertical ladders also called as deck ladder. Vertical lifelines are basically systems with special rope grabber fall arrest equipment connected to a rail or steel rope continuing along the ladder and full body harness worn by the personnel.
Horizontal lifeline: Provide protection for the personnel working at height from danger of falling where fall preventing measures such as parapet or railing are absent. Lifelines are basically systems which are formed of a lanyard connection between the rail or steel rope being installed along the sides close to space where fall risk starts and fall arrest equipment which is connected to the same and which is not needed to be removed while passing anchorage points and full body harness.
Temporary lifeline: These are lifelines provide protection for an individual work, project and removed at the end of the work such as NDT non-destructive testing or an installation needed on a place which shall not performed work at height again or before. Fixing at anchorage points is not required. Steel or synthetic ropes are usually installed by using temporary anchor points at the structure’s own elements such as beams and columns.
Permanent lifeline: These are lifelines used for works which require routine and constant working at height such as control and cleaning. They are finally fixed to the structure with anchorage points formed with permanent methods such as steel or chemical bolts, screwing and torque. Steel rope and railed lifeline systems are preferred as they are more resistant to wear such as weather conditions and damages of use.
Synthetic lifeline: It is the method that preferred in temporary lifelines and installed with synthetic ropes. It installs and removes rapidly by specially trained rope access technicians without damaging the structure.
Steel lifeline: It is a method uses with steel rope or rail and preferred mostly for permanent lifelines. If the work to be performed requires spark producing tools such as welding machine, spiral cutting tool or there are melting, flammable chemical substances which shall damage to synthetic lifeline at the working area then, they may also be used for temporary lifelines.
The safety net implementation is to cover the spaces which create danger of falling with synthetic net at locations where the personnel who shall work at height may not use any safety equipment. It is also used as a platform for working at height while performing roof coating installation for steel constructions instead of scaffold. Safety Net: The spaces at which working at height are performed which form risk of falling such as shaft, gallery, stairs and elevator shaft, roof space in steel construction buildings are closed with safety nets made of synthetic ropes.
Safety Net Platform: Fall arresting system also called as safety net is implemented at spaces such as courtyards and external facade of the building where working at heights shall be performed which are as wide as impossible to be covered. The life safety of the personnel who are working at height is ensured with the safety net installed on the carrying metal scaffold installed towards space from the edges of the structure.
